What is the Woman's Christian Temperance Union?The WCTU, or Women's Christian Temperance Union, is a temperance organization founded in 1874 that advocates for the prohibition of alcohol and other social reforms. Initially focused on alcohol abstinence and its link to social issues like poverty and abuse, the WCTU expanded its mission under leaders like Frances Willard, to include women's suffrage, labor laws, prison reform, and public health education. Its motto became "Agitate, Educate, Legislate," and it became one of the largest women's organizations in the 19th century, using methods like public education to lobby for its causes.
